Complete Varanasi Travel Guide 2025โ€“26: Everything You Need to Know

Varanasi isn’t just a destination โ€” it’s a feeling. That moment when your boat glides silently on the Ganga at dawn, the city still half-asleep, smoke rising from the ghats… no photograph does it justice. Let us help you plan a trip you’ll never forget.

Why Varanasi is unlike anywhere else

Honestly, we’re biased โ€” but so is everyone who’s ever been here. Varanasi has this uncanny ability to stop you in your tracks. You’ll walk into a narrow alley smelling of marigolds and incense, emerge at the edge of the Ganga, and suddenly feel like you’ve traveled three thousand years back in time.

It is the oldest continuously inhabited city on Earth โ€” older than Rome, older than Athens, older than Jerusalem. Lord Shiva is said to have made this his home, and you’ll feel that energy the moment you set foot here.

How to reach Varanasi

Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (VNS) is 26 km from the city. Direct flights connect from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Hyderabad. From the airport, prepaid taxis take about 40โ€“50 minutes to reach the ghats. International travelers fly via Delhi.
Varanasi is extremely well-connected by rail. Varanasi Junction (BSB) is the main station. Popular trains include Vande Bharat Express from Delhi (about 8 hours), Kashi Express, Mahamana Express, and Vibhuti Express. Book early โ€” trains fill up fast, especially Octoberโ€“February.
National Highway 19 (Delhiโ€“Kolkata) connects Varanasi to most major cities. Prayagraj is 120 km away (2 hrs), Lucknow is 300 km (4 hrs), and Agra is 565 km (7โ€“8 hrs). State buses are cheap; private cabs are more comfortable.

Top places to visit in Varanasi

We could list 50 places โ€” but let’s be real, you want the ones that’ll actually stay with you. Here are the eight you absolutely cannot miss.

1
Kashi Vishwanath Temple
The holiest of the 12 Jyotirlingas, this temple is the spiritual soul of Varanasi. The new Kashi Vishwanath Corridor has transformed the whole area โ€” you can now walk seamlessly from the Ganga right to the sanctum. Even if you’re not religious, the energy here is something else.
Darshan: 2:30 AM โ€“ 11 PMModest dress requiredOnline booking available
2
Dashashwamedh Ghat
The beating heart of Varanasi. Every evening, priests perform the Ganga Aarti here in perfect synchrony โ€” fire, flowers, chants, and the river. It’s theatrical and deeply moving at the same time. Come 45 minutes early or grab a boat for the best view.
Aarti: 6โ€“7 PM (season-based)Boat view: โ‚น200โ€“500
3
Manikarnika Ghat
This is Varanasi at its most profound. Manikarnika has been burning continuously for thousands of years โ€” the main cremation ghat. Hindus believe that dying here grants moksha. It’s an emotional, humbling place. Observe with deep respect; no photography.
Open 24 hoursNo photography
4
Assi Ghat
If Dashashwamedh is the dramatic one, Assi Ghat is the soulful one. Mornings here are magical โ€” yogis, pilgrims, students, and old men all sharing the same steps by the river. Named after the sword Goddess Durga hurled into the Ganga after slaying demons.
Best at sunriseMorning yoga sessions
5
Sarnath
Just 10 km from the city, Sarnath is where the Buddha gave his very first sermon after attaining enlightenment. The Dhamek Stupa, the Ashoka Pillar, and the museum โ€” home to India’s national emblem, the Lion Capital โ€” are all here.
Entry: โ‚น40 (Indian) / โ‚น600 (Foreign)Sunrise to Sunset
6
Kaal Bhairav Temple
The fearsome guardian of Varanasi. Legend says no one can stay in Kashi without his permission. This ancient temple is unlike any other โ€” alcohol is offered as prasad here. It’s wonderfully strange, and a fascinating window into Varanasi’s Tantric traditions.
Free entryVery busy on Tuesdays
7
Ramnagar Fort
Cross the Ganga by boat and step into the 18th-century world of the Maharaja of Varanasi. The fort museum has vintage cars, royal palanquins, and old weaponry. The boat ride across alone is worth it for the views of the Varanasi skyline.
Entry: โ‚น2510 AM โ€“ 5 PM
8
BHU Campus & New Vishwanath Temple
Banaras Hindu University is one of Asia’s largest residential universities โ€” and it’s gorgeous. The campus houses the New Vishwanath Temple, built entirely in white marble. A surprisingly peaceful corner of the city, perfect for a slow afternoon stroll.

Ganga Aarti โ€” the moment that changes people

We’ve seen seasoned travelers โ€” people who’ve been everywhere โ€” tear up at the Ganga Aarti. There’s something about 7 priests moving in perfect unison, fire blazing, conch shells echoing across the water, and a thousand people watching in complete silence that hits you at a frequency words can’t quite reach.

How to get the best experience

The aarti lasts about 45 minutes and happens every single evening without fail โ€” rain, fog, or festival.

โ›ต Hire a boat 45 min before. Best frontal view. โ‚น200โ€“500/person

Famous food โ€” eat like a Banarasi

Let’s be honest: some of the best reasons to come to Varanasi are the kachoris at 7 AM, the malaiyo in winter, and the paan after every meal. The food here is unapologetically indulgent โ€” and absolutely worth every calorie.

Things we wish someone had told us

๐Ÿ‘”
Dress modestly at temples โ€” cover shoulders and knees. Varanasi is conservative, and visitors are guests in a sacred space.
โฐ
Start early. The 5โ€“8 AM window on the ghats is the most atmospheric time of day, and you’ll avoid 90% of the crowds.
๐Ÿ’ต
Carry cash. Many boatmen, temple priests, and small shops are strictly cash-only โ€” ATMs near the ghats can run dry.
๐Ÿ“ต
Don’t photograph at Manikarnika Ghat. It’s a cremation ground. Be respectful โ€” your camera can wait.
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ
Watch out for touts near the ghats offering “free” tours or boat rides. They aren’t free. Politely decline and walk on.
๐Ÿ‘Ÿ
You’ll remove your shoes a lot โ€” at temples, ghat steps, and many shops. Wear slip-ons or sandals for ease.

Questions people actually ask

How many days should I spend in Varanasi? โŒ„
Honestly, 2 days is the minimum โ€” you can cover the ghats, main temples, Ganga Aarti, and a quick Sarnath trip. But 3โ€“4 days lets you go slower, wander without a plan, and actually let the city sink in. Pilgrims often stay 7+ days.
Is Varanasi safe for solo female travelers? โŒ„
Generally yes โ€” especially in the tourist and ghat areas. Dress conservatively, avoid isolated ghats after dark, and be firm with touts. Many solo female travelers visit every year without issue. Use your judgment as you would anywhere.
Can non-Hindus visit Kashi Vishwanath Temple? โŒ„
Yes! The temple is open to everyone, including foreign nationals and non-Hindus. Just carry a valid photo ID, dress appropriately, and be respectful inside the premises.
What’s the best time to see the Ganga Aarti? โŒ„
The evening aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat starts around 6 PM in winter and 7 PM in summer. Get there early โ€” at least 45โ€“60 minutes before โ€” or hire a boat for a beautiful river-view experience. It happens every single day, no exceptions.
How far is Sarnath from Varanasi? โŒ„
About 10 km โ€” roughly 20โ€“30 minutes by auto-rickshaw or cab. It’s very easy to do as a half-day trip. Budget โ‚น150โ€“250 for the auto ride and 2โ€“3 hours to explore properly.
What is Varanasi most famous for? โŒ„
The Ganga ghats, Kashi Vishwanath Temple, the Ganga Aarti, Banarasi Sarees, street food (especially kachoris and paan), and being one of the world’s oldest living cities. It is also the center of Indian classical music, Ayurveda, and Sanskrit scholarship.
